The "Almabtrieb" - or as in the Allgäu called "Viehscheid" - has a long tradition in the Alpine regions. It can be desrcibed as a ceremonial driving down of cattle from the mountain pastures into the valley. Its time is determined by the occurrence of cold spells or the absence of grass growth and is regionally different between mid-September and mid-October.
Herds that have spent the whole summer without accidents are led by a splendidly decorated "wreath-cow" on their return in the valley. This festive adornment - the "Aufkranzen" - goes back to pre-Christian times. The loud bells around the neck of the animals are there to protect them from enemy demons on the way from the Alm to the village and escort them safely into the valley.
An event filled with music, dancing and all sorts of culinary treats that delights locals and guests alike. Guests come from far away to witness the spectacle. In the cozy beer tents traditional brass music is played and the people of the society for traditional costumes show their skills in dancing the "Schuhplattler" and blowing the alphorn.
Plan a short break in the Allgäu during the fall season and enjoy this spectacle. Experience the traditional celebrations at the end of summer and enjoy the golden season in the Alps. Long walks with the little ones through the colorful autumn leaves, which rustles so wonderfully, as well as joyful hiking at pleasant temperatures are part of your holiday program during your short break vacation in the Allgäu.
